âPunjab Ignored, Gujarat Favouredâ: Former MP Dimpa Accuses Centre of Trade Bias
Zira/Ferozepur, March 5: Former Khadoor Sahib MP Jasbir Singh Dimpa on Wednesday accused the central government led by Narendra Modi of showing a âstepmotherly attitudeâ toward Punjab, particularly on issues concerning trade and farmers.
Speaking at a press conference held under the leadership of Kulbir Singh Zira, the former MP alleged that Punjab has been sidelined in economic decisions while other states are receiving greater advantages.
Wagah Trade Closure Criticised
Dimpa claimed that the Centre shut down trade through the Wagah Border following the Pahalgam attack, which earlier facilitated around âč3,300 crore worth of trade between India and Pakistan.According to him, the decision severely affected traders and businesses in Punjab that relied on cross-border commerce.
At the same time, he alleged that large-scale trade worth over âč3.5 lakh crore continues through Gujarat, particularly via airports linked to major corporate houses.âPunjab Makes Sacrifices but Misses Economic Benefitsâ
Dimpa argued that Punjab has always played a major role in national service and security but does not receive proportional economic benefits.âWhenever sacrifices are required for the nation, Punjab is placed in the front. But when it comes to economic advantages and trade opportunities, Gujarat is given preference,â he said.
The former MP said the Centre should adopt policies that treat all states fairly and ensure Punjabâs economic interests are protected.Concerns Over Proposed IndiaâUS Trade Deal
Dimpa also expressed concern about the proposed IndiaâUnited States trade agreement, warning that it could negatively impact Indian farmers. He said farmers in Punjab are already struggling with rising costs, debt burdens, and uncertain crop prices. According to him, allowing increased imports under the agreement could further weaken the agricultural sector.
Demand for Womenâs Allowance Scheme
During the press conference, Dimpa and Kulbir Singh Zira also urged the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab to fulfil its election promise of providing âč1,000 per month to women. They demanded that the state government release âč48,000 in arrears for the past four years to every eligible woman beneficiary.
Congress Leaders Present
Several local Congress leaders and party workers attended the press conference, including Amardeep Singh Ashu Bangar and Gurbhej Singh Tibbi, who supported the demands raised by the party leadership. The leaders reiterated that issues related to trade, farmersâ welfare, and financial assistance for women should be addressed promptly to ensure economic stability in Punjab.
